4/4/23

Today is shopping day. After breakfast, we traipse over to the town. It is low season here so there aren’t too many people around. Until we went into Mango!

We bought the Bear some lovely apparel from Mango and Zara. Lunch is in the Green Market and we also have coffee and cake.

We walk through the Dalt Vila and stop to look in shops. We buy some bits and pieces. Having driven up to the top of the Dalt Vila, we didn’t see the need to trek all the way up.

We make our way down and stop at the Pasha shop before sitting down for a drink.

Dinner is at a Thai on the way home. Hi here’s plenty of leftovers so we ask to take them home.

Bed is late and I’m tired from the day.

Tapas

We set off to explore Santa Eulalia after breakfast. The weather is fantastic and I immediately acclimatise to the warmth. It is around 18 degrees Celsius and I’m in my element.

We park our car and walk along the promenade. There is a wee beach and there are folks sunbathing, kids playing and others splashing in the sea.

We find a restaurant and order some tapas for lunch and beer to wash down the food.

There are lots of souvenir shops and we buy some bits for the house.

After lunch and coffee, we drive over to Santa Gertrudis which a lovely place with lots of artisanal shops. We find a church and go in for a wee prayer.

We head back home and have a snack before driving off to Cap des Falco to watch the sun set. The road leading up this point is a dirt track, past the salt mines and I did not enjoy the drive.

After sunset, we drive back home. Everyone is tired, but it’s been a great day.

Summer recap

A belated happy September, it’s back to school after a hot summer!

The Bear finished up at school for the year mid July and spent three weeks at her beloved dance camp. They had changed the venue this year which necessitated driving but she enjoyed it nonetheless. She did have a minor accident entailing a trip to A&E! Thankfully no broken bones or teeth! I caught Covid and have not fully recovered, but am not taking it lying down.

In the last few weeks in August, we went to our happy place in France, after a three-year hiatus ! It was great to be back and the good weather continued. The Bear clocked beach and pool time, a few museums and some good shopping.

We went to Paris for my birthday which was great. As it was for the day, we made sure to keep our itinerary short – The Musée D’Orangerie to see Monet’s Water lilies, the Eiffel Tower, macarons and tea at Ladurée, a quick walk near the Louvre and that was it!

A few days later, we visited Bruges which is another favourite city. Luckily for us the cottage we stayed in a decade ago was available and it a great walk done memory lane for the family! We did the canal boat tour, Dali museum, had lovely meals and just enjoyed the vibe of the city. People were lovely and chilled.

I suggested a day trip to Brussels seeing as it was only an hour away on the train. Everyone was up for it so off we went! Again it being a day trip meant we had to keep the itinerary short. The Bear wanted to see the Manneken Pis – we ended up seeing the dog and girl versions too! A Belgian Waffle was a must have too! We walked around the Grand Place, bought some biscuits and the Hubby checked out a cool vinyl shop. We also ticked off the Chocolate Museum which was informative.

We really enjoyed our holiday and felt recharged returning to London. It’s back to school now. and the gorgeous summer weather has also come to an end, as if sensing that the long carefree days of summer are over!

Weekend recap

Just like that it is Monday again. Hope you had a good weekend. Ours was a busy one!

On Saturday, the Bear had her tennis and swim lessons after which we raced over to school as both Hubby and I had signed up as volunteers for the school fête. After a busy few hours manning the designated stall, we helped tidy up and dragged our tired feet back home. I had intended to cook squash risotto but was wrecked to be honest. Instead, we went to our usual Portuguese cafe for some toasted paninis, and then watched the new Season 3 Malory Towers on iplayer. It is so good, enjoyed by both adults as well as said child! Saturday was rather warm and at 10pm we foolishly went for a drive looking for juice. Alas shops were closing and we ended up buying a pack of coconut water from our local shop. It was a good call as we felt refreshed from drinking it.

Sunday started early with the Bear’s run which she completed in good time. We decided to give Pilates a miss and went to Notting Hill instead for a wander. We booked a table at Granger and Co with a 2 hour wait and ventured over to Portobello Market. The Hubby bought some records whilst we checked out the knick knacks on sale.

Our slot at Granger and Co became available around the 2 hour wait mark and we gladly ordered!

My favourite ricotta hotcakes were fab!
Beef burger for the Bear was huge!
Coconut rice pudding and caramelised pineapple for the Hubby

Service was prompt and attentive. We were happy with our meal and finished off our trip with a stop at Daunt Books (having been to Waterstones earlier). We bought the Bear the 3rd Malory Tower book and she has a good selection to read over summer.

A great day had, lots added to our Summer 2022 memories.

Sunday lunch

I dusted off my beloved Barefoot in Paris cookbook recently and made one of our old favourite recipes salmon and puy lentils dish when a friend came over for dinner. I do love Ina Garten. Her recipes are simple, practical and generous. Hubby and I used to watch her cooking shows on Food Network years ago, longing to be her friend as she sure knows how to throw a dinner party!

With summer in full swing now, I wanted to cook us a nice Sunday lunch that wasn’t the typical roast and trimmings. Flicking through Barefoot in Paris, I saw a recipe for Chicken in 40 cloves of garlic, which I made once before, many years ago. I thought it was worth a re-visit along with the recommended side dish of Moroccan Couscous.

The recipe for the chicken can be found here https://barefootcontessa.com/recipes/chicken-with-forty-cloves-of-garlic

Chicken in 40 cloves of garlic (I halved the recipe)

I couldn’t find the recipe for the Moroccan Couscous online and I also modified it slightly. Credit to Ina Garten:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup diced butternut squash
  • 2 small courgettes, diced
  • 2 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 red onion, peeled and diced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 200g couscous
  • 1 stock cubed, crumbled
  • 300 ml boiling water
  • 1/2 cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Lemon zest, 1tsp
  • A handful of chopped parsley, dill, mint

Method:

  • Heat oven at 180 degrees Celsius
  • Spread the diced vegetables onto a foil lined baking tray
  • Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper
  • Cook in the oven for 30 minutes (or once soft)
  • Remove tray from the oven and keep warm
  • Place couscous into a large bowl
  • Measure out the boiling water into a heatproof jug and crumble in the stock cube and cumin. Stir well
  • Pour the water onto the couscous and cover with clingfilm for 5 minutes
  • Remove the clingfilm and season with salt and pepper
  • Dish out the couscous onto a platter and mix through the herbs and lemon zest
  • Top with the roast vegetables

The above serves 3 (remember I halved the chicken recipe) and there was some couscous leftover for lunch the next day.

Moroccan Couscous salad

Do you have a favourite cookbook which is your go to with several easy but tasty recipes?

Both dishes were awarded thumbs up here by both Hubby and the Bear.
